WHY IS GAS DETECTION IMPORTANT?

Gas detection instruments are necessary tools in protecting human life and safeguarding property.

Atmospheric hazards are among the top killers in the workplace. Whether it be low or highs levels of Oxygen, Flammable gases, or Toxic gases these hazards in the air have the potential to kill without detection. Gas detection is the ultimate defense in the recognition, warning, and safeguarding of human life and property against the atmospheric hazards.

Evolution of Gas Detection

Forms of gas detection have been around for many years. Miners would take a canary (Miner's Canary) down into the shafts with them and monitor the bird. If the bird acted abnormally or died the miners knew there was a atmospheric problem. This gave the miners a little time to respond because the bird is affected by the hazards faster and a smaller quantities than the human body giving the miners a warning of the hazard in the air. Later the Japanese Waltzing Mouse was used. This mouse was constantly active waltzing around in his cage. The cage had metal sides the amplified the sounds the mouse made when waltzing. When the mouse quit waltzing as noted by the absence of sound the miners had a warning of atmospheric hazards. Later still, the flame safety lamp which had a small flame in a lamp would detect the presence of low oxygen and flammable gases. By the change in the flame the lamp would alert or give warning to the miners of the hazards. Today, many forms of gas detection are available, relatively inexpensive, and a lot more reliable and accurate.

Gas Detection Instruments

Gas detection instruments by design and application can detect specific gases before the gas has become a significant atmospheric hazard. Upon detection the instrument gives a warning or alarm. Quality instruments should provide a audible, visual, and sensationally alarm allowing the user to be alerted in most any situation. These instruments allow or pulled air into sensors that are specific to a gas. The sensors detect the presence of the gas and measure the quantity of that gas giving the user a visual read out of the gas and its quantity.

Do you have the potential for exposure to atmospheric hazards?

Do you have gas detection instruments? With the affordability of these monitors today, no company that has the potential for exposure to atmospheric hazards should be without gas detection whether through gas monitor purchase, services, or rent. Many instruments are very user friendly, highly durable, compact, and multiple gas sensitive.

Haz-Matters; Professionals in Gas Detection

Haz-Matters as a professional in dealing with hazards is naturally a professional in gas detection. We can help incorporate gas detection for THE protection of human life and safeguarding of property. If your working in an environment that could have the potential for the development of atmospheric hazards and aren't protecting yourself or your workers, Haz-Matters can assess the environments you do or may encounter, provide advise on the correct gas detection instrument, and order that instrument for you. When selecting a gas monitor a lot of factors and considerations must be addressed so that the monitor will provide proper protection. We can evaluate and address these items and provide professional advise on the proper equipment. If you currently have gas monitors in use, are they providing the right protection and are they functioning properly?

Maintenance and Calibration Issues

Gas Detection Instruments are not fool proof and most detection errors are due to poor maintenance, calibration, and operating. In order for these monitors to function properly and provide accurate measurement readings the meter must be maintenance including its sensors, calibrated to the write gas mixture, alarming at the proper set points, and taken care of properly. Haz-Matters will address the necessary maintenance and calibration issues and provide professional care for your monitors. We can also train in-house personnel on the proper procedures and operation techniques of the gas detection instruments. For more information on this topic go to: Equipment Maintenance.
